February 19, 1924 - January 13, 2017
Hillsboro - Mattie Irene Thompson Maslen went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2017. She was born at home on February 19, 1924 in Stevensville, Montana to Thomas Albert and Hattie May Young Thompson. In 1928 when she was the age of 4, her family moved to Thorp, Washington, and then later to Kennewick, Washington. In 1931 the family moved to Hillsboro, Oregon. Irene attended David Hill grade school until the 8th grade. Irene and her sisters Gladys and Vida, enjoyed going skating at the Pavilion in Shute Park. During one of those outings at the skating rink, she met a guy, Wilber Allen Maslen. They were married on November 27, 1942 in Stevenson, Washington. She was a stay-at-home wife and mother with the birth of their first child, Dale in November 1943. Wilber had been serving in the Army during this time, and finished his tour in 1944. In July 1945 their second child, Michael was born, and later adding Pam to the group in March 1947. There was a short break until December 1952 when Tom came into the family. By then they were starting to run out of bedrooms again, so Wilber decided to dig out under the house and add a basement to their home. That took a while, but made room for more family, and in March 1961 Ted was born, and then Jeff in March 1963. After the kids had grown, Irene went to work at the Witch Hazel School Cafeteria. Irene was also active in the Christian Church of Hillsboro assisting with special events and preparing for Sunday morning church services. Later she took up visiting garage sales as her weekly activity of choice. Both Irene and Wilber enjoyed square dancing with their group, Lads and Plaids, on a regular basis throughout the years. She enjoyed going camping with family and friends, and any activity that included grandkids or family. Wilber passed in 2000 from cancer, and was severely missed from the family's lives. Irene is survived by her sister Vida Bozich and brother Wally Thompson along with her 6 children, 10 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Services will be held at the Christian Church of Hillsboro at 2pm on Friday the 27th. In place of flowers, please make donations to the Christian Church of Hillsboro or the charity of your choice.
